Two Deputies Gunned Down Trying to Talk Down Man With Shotgun

Two police deputies were shot while responding to a neigborhood dispute in Washington on Thursday afternoon. A suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.

The incident comes against a backdrop of increasing violence against the police in the United States, creating a new political crisis for President Joe Biden, who is already facing the difficult task of retaining control of Congress in the November midterms.

According to a statement from Bellingham Police Department, at around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday deputies responded to reports of a dispute in the Peaceful Valley area.

The police were notified that two men were shooting at each other.

Deputies arrived on the scene and attempted a dialogue on the street with a man who had a shotgun, according to the statement.

During the dialogue, both deputies were shot. At 6:02 p.m., the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. The police didn’t provide details of the suspect’s name and age.

Deputies Both in a Stable Condition

On Thursday evening, both injured deputies were reported as conscious, alert and in a stable condition at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center, police said.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Bellingham Police have requested that the Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Response Team (LEMART) should take over the investigation.

“Any additional information about this investigation should be directed to the Bellingham Police Department. We hope to release additional details tomorrow. We appreciate the community’s kind words and support for our deputies,” the police statement said.

A neighbor in the area who gave his name only as “Michael” told The Bellingham Herald that a deputy told him that police had been shot, and to lock himself inside his house and not to come out. Michael also said he heard five to six gunshots on Thursday afternoon.

The neighbour added that a house in his area, believed to be the suspect’s, was lit up by floodlights on Thursday night while a large number of police officers remained in the area as of 8 p.m.

The local newspaper reported that more than a dozen police vehicles were seen speeding eastbound on the Mount Baker Highway.

Newsweek has contacted Bellingham Police for an update on the investigation.

Forty-three officers have been hurt in shootings in the U.S. so far in 2022. Six of the 43 died, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

On February 2, an off-duty officer with the New York Police Department was shot during an attempted carjacking on his way to work. He was reported to be in stable condition.

Last year saw the highest number of law enforcement officers intentionally killed in the line of duty since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Seventy-three officers died by criminal killings while working in 2021, according to year-end data provided to CNN by the FBI.

FBI director Christopher Wray said on January 13 that nearly half of the 73 officers did not engage with their assailants before being attacked.
